THE SHIATSU MASSAGE : HOW DOES IT WORK ?

All you need to know !

Shiatsu massage is increasingly sought after for its multiple benefits.
This type of massage also became a fashion among some massage enthusiasts. Shiatsu massage is a traditional massage originating from Japan. This origin allows shiatsu to reflect a certain serenity and balance, like any other technique or art with so-called Japanese effects. Indeed, since its inception, shiatsu is based on the balance of energy circulation, a mental and physical relaxation.

The « shi » refers to the fingers, and « atsu » refers to a pressure, this technique is also defined as a manual massage therapy aimed at restoring balance inside our body by applying pressure to key points located the length of our body. Shiatsu allows you to create a connection between your body and your mind, and to restore the balance between them that gives you a feeling of well-being.

The shiatsu technique, inspired by traditional Chinese medicine, uses specific points located along the nerves to stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation. In this massage therapy technique, the aim is to promote the circulation of Qi, the vital energy, throughout the body, by stimulating the tsubos which are points governing the organs.

Shiatsu, as a gentle medicine, contributes to the relief of pain through natural means. This type of massage favors the application of traditional methods, using the knowledge of the virtues of good energy circulation, without having to resort to medicines or conventional treatments.

The philosophy of shiatsu massage is based on a reconciliation of body and spirit to revitalize a patient. Shiatsu treats the body in its entirety, whether psychological or physical, and does so without the intervention of chemical products. Shiatsu massage does not act directly on the organs, but rather stimuli to improve their function. It does not attack cells, but promotes the strengthening of the immune system. Several types of shiatsu concepts exist according to each philosophy.

One then distinguishes the following types of shiatsu:

  • Namikoshi shiatsu, which is the most widespread and taught in Japanese state schools,

T. Namikoshi developed shiatsu treatments that can stimulate the body. This type of shiatsu uses the methods that originated this type of treatment;

THE SHIATSU MASSAGE : MULTIPLE BENEFITS

One technique, many advantages

A lack of scientific research still does not allow us to properly define the therapeutic effects of shiatsu. However, studies have shown that this method has multiple benefits. The benefits of shiatsu allow to prevent or calm the physical and psychological pains of a person. The purpose of a shiatsu session is to eliminate blockages to give optimal well-being to your patient. Depending on the type of session and the type of technique used, shiatsu can have different properties, it can be stimulating, toning and invigorating, or have a sedative and pain-relieving effect.

This treatment does not produce any secondary effect on the organs. Among the benefits of a shiatsu session, I can cite some examples such as the treatment of:

  • Psychological problems: this type of massage allows to prevent and reduce the effects of nervous depression, anxiety, stress and anxiety. Shiatsu therefore allows a patient to relax; • Sommelier trouble: pressure on the points associated with the sommelier allows the release of substances that allow the brain to regulate the sommelier;

  • Muscular trouble: such as muscle stiffness, bloating,

  • Digestive trouble: improving digestion by stimulating appetite for example;

  • Gynecological problems: generally used for menstrual problems, shiatsu can relieve nausea, relieve pain during pregnancy, but also for postpartum treatments and care;

  • Respiratory problems: the effects of shiatsu massage are clearly visible in the treatment of asthma and sinusitis. Pressing a specific point or area allows the therapist to release and dissolve blockages that cause breathing problems. • Rheumatic disorders:

  • Certain psychiatric disorders;

In addition, shiatsu can also provide:

  • A reduction in lumbar pain;

  • A reduction in the side effects of certain treatments such as chemotherapy,

  • Assistance in post-surgery retraining;

  • A strengthening of immune defenses to prevent or alleviate diseases such as fever or rheumatism;

Shiatsu also promotes the production of endorphins which can alleviate all types of pain. A shiatsu session allows a patient to have a doctor who is trained to listen, and to receive treatment at both the physical and psychological levels. This form of charge charge can comfort the patient and help him/her throughout the treatment.

THE SHIATSU MASSAGE: CONDUCT OF A SESSION

And the body gets relaxed

Shiatsu sessions may differ in some respects depending on the shiatsu technique used. The tests may therefore vary depending on the patient's condition, pathologies and expected results.

The training

Before a shiatsu session, a training is necessary to determine the demands and needs of patients. The practitioner makes an energy balance and evaluates the state of health, the level of stress, lifestyle habits such as dietary habits, and local treatments. This test can be done by questioning or by palpation of the areas to be treated. The general examination allows us to personalize the massage, identify the symptoms as well as the probable causes of a disease, and find the areas to treat in order to restore the circulation of energy, of Qi.

The beginning of the session

The "patient" can remain dressed during a shiatsu session. It can be placed on a futon, a table or a massage chair, or any other position that favors the detection of work points, the manipulation of energy points of the body. The practitioner begins by identifying and evaluating the areas to be treated, as well as the patient's sensitivity to pain. The practitioner may ask to do movements that can improve the quality of the massage, such as heating and relaxing the muscles, or relaxing to improve energy circulation. It is not uncommon for cabinets to use decorative elements to enhance the ambiance such as bougainvillea, plants or the sound of water. Massage should be practiced in a calm and soothing environment to allow the spirit to renew the body with complete serenity. As a gentle medicine, shiatsu massage can rely on essential oils to provide a sense of comfort and sensations that can stimulate the senses and Qi.

For the massage, the practitioner can proceed in different ways using the fingers, the palm of the hand, the knee or the tail, and sometimes with the foot depending on the degree of pressure needed. To restore balance, massage aims to recharge, or on the contrary to de-energize the organs. To facilitate the exchange, the practitioner speaks to his patient, provides explanations about his actions, checks the responses, and provides practical advice.

At the end of each session, the practitioner can focus on the actions that please him and the effects achieved. The woman gives recommendations on adequate nutrition and the gestures to adopt to complete the treatment. I can recommend and explain how to do self-shiatsu at home.

Duration and Frequency

In general, a shiatsu session lasts on average between one hour and one hour and a half. The duration may vary depending on the type of shiatsu needed, the number of areas to be treated, or the result sought. The age and severity of affections are also parameters that can vary the duration of sessions in shiatsu. It is necessary to work regularly on defective organs to improve energy circulation. The number of necessary treatments varies depending on the patient's condition. Most often, practitioners require two to three sessions to obtain satisfactory results. As a means of prevention, it is recommended to take regular courses to prevent any energy imbalance. It is preferable to detect as many anomalies as possible for a faster recovery.

Some specialists also recommend doing a session every season. Without any known secondary effect, shiatsu can be practiced even when necessary to keep the body in perfect balance, and thus achieve permanent well-being. Shiatsu can be used only for relaxation purposes.

In shiatsu, it is important to take your time, relax and release pressure. A session must take into account all the organs of the body. It is necessary to prepare your agenda to avoid the interruption of a session, which could also accentuate the energy imbalance.

THE SHIATSU MASSAGE: THE LITTLE HISTORY

Did you know ?

The current version of shiatsu is actually recent, but the history of shiatsu dates back to the 19th century, the time of manual massage techniques such as Anma. The arrival of Western scientific techniques in Japan has brought about their success. But the first clinic using shiatsu procedures was opened in 1925 in Muroranpar, Japan by Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905-2000). Great authors such as Takichi Tsukuda and Kazuma Fukunaga published works on traditional Japanese care techniques.
The term Shiatsu first appeared in the publication of Chikaraōyōryōhō in 1928.

The techniques were developed and spread by a good number of great teachers, but were badly affected by the Second World War and the establishment of medical systems of the 'West.

In 1955, the Japanese Ministry of Health officially recognized shiatsu as a full-fledged medicine and granted Tokujirō Namikoshi and his son Tōru Namikoshi an official license. And in 1964, shiatsu benefited from a status à la massage. In May 1997, the European Union adopted shiatsu as an integral part of the 8 complementary medicine methods.

Currently, these techniques continue to develop and are taking their place in soft medicine as well as alternative and complementary therapies.
